Sumac adds a tangy lemon flavour to an entire range of recipes and is a classic spice native to the Middle East. Best used sprinkled on salads such as Fattoush, or on grilled meats and fish.
A wonderfully delicious addition to any spice cupboard. Sumac is a widely used and essential spice in Middle Eastern cooking. Sumac is a very interesting spice as it has an earthy, tangy lemony flavour. It is used in the East the way in which lemons and vinegar are used in the West.
It is the key ingredient in the Lebanese salad ‘Fattoush’, is a spice in the Zaatar seasoning blend, and a sprinkle of Sumac on top of Hummus brings out the flavour perfectly. In fact, a touch of Sumac on many dishes can magnify flavours. Sumac works especially well with grilled chicken and fish.
Sumac also has many health benefits including helping to lower cholesterol levels and stabilizing blood sugar.
